Former City Councillor Jailed for Child Sex Offences

Abdul-Majid Rahman, a former Labour councillor for Newport City Council, has been sentenced to three years and eight months in prison for possessing and sharing indecent images of children.

Rahman, 34, pleaded guilty to the charges at Newport Crown Court on Tuesday, May 31. He admitted to distributing 12 category A indecent photographs of children between November 2020 and May 2021, and sharing one category B indecent image on March 1, 2021.

He also pleaded guilty to possessing 30 category A, 5 category B, and 67 category C indecent images of children, spanning from 2005 to 2021.

Rahman represented the Victoria ward on the council from 2012 until he resigned in October 2021, citing personal reasons. Following his resignation, a by-election was held in December to fill his vacant seat.

In addition to his prison sentence, Rahman will be required to register as a sex offender for life and will be subject to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order.
