Child Rapist Sentenced to 12 Years, Deemed Significant Risk to Public
Anthony Rennard, 28, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for raping a teenage girl in 2020. He was branded a significant risk to the public by the court.
Prosecutor Richard Bennett told Teesside Crown Court that the victim "froze" after the assault and initially felt unable to report the crime. She eventually came forward six months later.
Rennard, currently incarcerated at HMP Holme House in Stockton, denied the rape charge but was convicted after a trial late last year. The court heard that the victim continues to suffer from the trauma, experiencing sleep disturbances, nightmares, and difficulty returning to the area where the attack occurred.
In a statement, the victim shared her ongoing struggles: "I feel low. It's affected my education, I don't want to get out of bed. I feel like this has changed my life forever."
Defense attorney Nicholas Askins argued that Rennard began drinking at a young age and suffers from cognitive difficulties, as diagnosed by a psychiatrist. The court learned that Rennard has participated in reading and writing courses while on remand.
Judge Timothy Stead highlighted Rennard's significant risk to the public, imposing the 12-year prison sentence. Rennard was also ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely and is subject to a restraining order prohibiting contact with his victim or any mention of her on social media.
Rennard's criminal history includes convictions for burglary, firearms offenses, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. In 2016, he attacked a friend in Glasgow over a £30 debt, slashing his face with a Stanley knife and inflicting further physical violence. Rennard served a five-year-seven-month sentence for this attack.
