Predatory Sexual Offender Jailed for Raping Young Girl in Norfolk
Anthony Smith, 41, has been sentenced to an extended 21-year prison term for raping a young girl in Norfolk. Smith, originally from King's Lynn, admitted to the offenses, which occurred between February and December 2019.
The court heard that Smith had "pestered" the victim, who was under 13 years old, before taking her to a secluded spot by the River Ouse in King's Lynn where he attacked her. Despite the victim's pleas for him to stop, Smith continued the assault.
Judge Katharine Moore, sentencing Smith on Thursday, July 28, described him as a "significant risk of causing serious harm" to other children. She stated that Smith had been "grossly corrupting" the victim, who was clearly distressed and scared throughout the ordeal.
Smith's sentence consists of 16 years in custody followed by five years on licence. He was also prohibited from contacting the victim indefinitely and was placed on the sex offenders register for life.
Robert English, Smith's defense attorney, argued that the guilty plea spared the victim from testifying in court. He also stated that the offenses were "out of character" for Smith, who had no prior convictions for similar crimes.
Norfolk Police issued a statement highlighting the predatory nature of Smith's actions and emphasized the severity of the sentence. They expressed relief that the victim and the public are now safe from Smith.
The police spokesman added that the victim and her family were grateful for the support they received and are looking forward to moving on with their lives. He expressed hope for the victim's future happiness and success.
