Predator Jailed for Six Years After New Year's Day Rape in London

Awet Solomon, 24, has been sentenced to six years and nine months in prison for the rape of a woman in London on New Year's Day.

The attack occurred as the victim disembarked a bus on Mansell Street, near the Tower of London, and was walking towards Whitechapel High Street.

Solomon, who was unknown to the victim, dragged her into an alleyway, where he beat, strangled, and sexually assaulted her.

After Solomon fled, the victim contacted the police and an investigation was launched on January 1. Within 36 hours, Solomon, of Bath Road, West Drayton, was arrested, charged, and remanded in custody.

Solomon pleaded guilty to rape, strangulation, and actual bodily harm. He was sentenced at Inner London Crown Court on Tuesday.

Detective Superintendent Richard Waight of the City of London Police expressed gratitude to the victim for her courage in coming forward and supporting the investigation. He emphasized the seriousness with which City of London Police treat allegations of rape and sexual offenses, assuring victims that they will be believed, listened to, and supported throughout the investigation process.

Waight also praised the investigators for their diligence and hard work in bringing Solomon to justice, contributing to making the City a safer place.
