Benjamin Cheyne Sentenced to 11 Years for Sexual Assault of Minor

Benjamin Cheyne, 32, was sentenced to 11 years in prison last week after being found guilty of two counts of assault by penetration and two counts of sexual assault against a minor. The offenses occurred between February 2019 and May 2020.

At Salisbury Crown Court, Judge Barnett described the crimes as "an extremely serious offense" and stated that Cheyne's "selfish, totally unthinkable conduct... caused unthinkable damage" to the victim.

The victim's mother, in a statement read to the court, revealed the devastating impact the assaults have had on her daughter. The now 11-year-old suffers from "deteriorating self esteem and confidence," night terrors, and struggles with sleep and learning. She fears for her safety and struggles to trust others.

Judge Barnett highlighted the "far reaching consequences" the assaults have had on the victim's "happiness, development, relationships with others and schooling," causing "enormous trauma."

Cheyne, who maintains his innocence, plans to move away from the area after serving his sentence. He will also be subject to a year-long license, a sexual harm prevention order, and a restraining order indefinitely.

Detective Sergeant Eileen Speck of the Child Abuse Unit expressed gratitude for the hard work of the investigating officer and highlighted the dedication of the unit in protecting children.
