Paedophile Nurse Spared Jail After Court Hears He "Lost Everything"

Christopher Ewan, a 45-year-old married father of four, was spared jail after admitting to downloading over 100 child rape images. Ewan, who used to work in the A&E department at Aintree hospital, downloaded the images during the lockdown period. His crimes came to light when police were alerted to suspicious activity on his Sky broadband account and Kik Messenger.

During a police raid on his former home in Netherton, officers seized Ewan's Samsung phone, which contained 137 Category A files, including 127 photos and 10 videos depicting child rape. The phone also contained 217 Category B images, 130 Category C files, one prohibited "cartoon" image, and 21 extreme pornographic images.

Ewan initially denied any knowledge of the indecent material but later admitted to downloading it, claiming it was not for sexual gratification. However, he later confessed that this was not true.

The court heard that the crimes had a devastating impact on Ewan's family. His wife left him, the marriage ended, and his children were taken away. His home was targeted by vigilantes, forcing his family to flee. Ewan has not seen his children since July and only speaks to them intermittently.

Ewan's lawyer argued that his client had "lost everything" and was in need of rehabilitation. He highlighted Ewan's previous good character and his career as a nurse, which is now over due to his crimes.

Judge Anil Murray, while acknowledging Ewan's remorse and the impact on his family, sentenced him to 10 months in prison, suspended for two years. He also ordered Ewan to comply with a 40-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and to sign the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.
