Greggs Heir's Jail Term for Sexually Abusing Boys Reduced

The heir to the Greggs bakery chain, Colin Gregg, has had his jail term for sexually abusing young boys reduced by five years.

Gregg was initially sentenced to 13 and a half years in March for indecently assaulting four boys aged between 10 and 14 over three decades. The 76-year-old, from Newcastle, had previously attempted to overturn his convictions at London's Court of Appeal but was unsuccessful.

However, senior judges ruled that the original prison sentence imposed by Newcastle Crown Court was too lengthy and should be reduced.

During the original trial, it was revealed that Gregg, who played a significant role in expanding the family business and was also a social worker and teacher, was a "predatory paedophile" who abused his position of trust.

Trial judge Robin Mairs described Gregg as a "charismatic, inspiring teacher and mentor" who used these qualities to groom young boys. The assaults began in 1963 and continued for almost 30 years while Gregg was employed as a teacher.

One child was abused in a swimming pool, while others were molested in a gym, Gregg's study, or a car.

Sasha Wass QC, representing Gregg at the Appeal Court, argued that his sentence was excessive considering the nature of his offenses.

Lord Justice Davis, presiding over the appeal with Mrs Justice Nicola Davies and Judge Nicholas Dean QC, agreed that the sentence was too harsh. He stated: "Having reflected upon the matter, the view of this court is that a total sentence of eight-and-a-half years is appropriate for this offending and for this offender."
