Postman Jailed for Sexually Assaulting Teenage Girl

A postman who groomed and indecently assaulted a teenage girl in the early 2000s has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Colin White, 60, of Newton Aycliffe, was convicted of two counts of indecent assault following a trial at Durham Crown Court. The court heard that White had repeatedly sexually assaulted the girl, who was underage at the time, over a period of several years.

White, who was working as a postman at the time of the offences, would often ply the girl with alcohol and cigarettes before abusing her. He also displayed kindness to the vulnerable girl, grooming her and making her feel indebted to him.

The court was told that the girl, now an adult, suffered from depression and feelings of guilt as a result of White's actions. She said in a victim statement that she felt she was to blame for what happened, adding that White had "groomed her for his own sexual gratification."

In sentencing White, Judge James Adkin said the girl was "particularly vulnerable by age and isolation" and that White had "used her for sex." He added that White had "no relevant previous convictions" but that the offences were "serious and abhorrent."

White will be on the sex offenders register for life and an indefinite restraining order was also imposed.
