Sex Offender Jailed for Failing to Register Address

A sex offender who was caught by online paedophile hunters has been sentenced to prison for failing to inform the police of his address.

Derby Crown Court heard that Connor Burdett, 28, was required to register as a sex offender after being cautioned for attempting to engage in sexual communication with an underage girl.

Under the terms of the sex offender register, Burdett was obligated to notify the police within three days of any address change. However, he failed to do so and was subsequently arrested and charged.

Judge Shaun Smith QC, sentencing Burdett over a video-link, stated: "Mr Burdett, you have really got to start taking responsibility. You are someone that seems to think you don't have to do what you are supposed to do. Well, you do, and when you leave prison today you will have to go to a police station within three days and tell them where you are living. Do you understand that?"

Burdett replied, "Yes."

Judge Smith continued, "Because if you don't, you will have to go back to prison for longer. Where are you going when you leave prison today?"

Burdett responded, "I'm going to the cop shop then I am going to my mum's house."

Judge Smith asked, "What happens if you move away from living at your mum's house? What do you have to do?"

Burdett replied, "I have got to go to the police station and tell them of my whereabouts."
