Connor Pennell Sentenced to 9-and-a-Half Years for Rape and Controlling Behaviour
Connor Pennell, a man from Skelmersdale, has been sentenced to nine and a half years in prison for a series of horrific offenses against a woman he was controlling. The court found him guilty of breaching a restraining order, rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, non-fatal strangulation, and three counts of voyeurism.
The case came to light when detectives uncovered footage on Pennell's phone captured from a baby camera monitor. This chilling evidence showed the rape of the victim, who was trapped in a controlling relationship with Pennell. Concerns were initially raised in July 2024 by officers who spoke with the victim, who bravely came forward.
Despite a previous protection from harassment order and charges of battery and strangulation, Pennell continued his abusive behavior. He used threats and manipulation, including the threat of releasing intimate images, to control and intimidate the victim over an extended period. Pennell's controlling and coercive behavior escalated into violence both physically and through text messages.
Upon arrest, Pennell denied the charges and claimed his phone would corroborate his story. However, a forensic examination revealed the truth: he had intentionally recorded the offenses on the baby monitor without the victim's knowledge. The victim bravely disclosed these incidents to police, describing an experience that left her feeling she was going to die when Pennell strangled her.
In her impact statement, the victim spoke of the profound impact Pennell's actions have had on her life, stripping away her confidence and future. She highlighted her journey towards healing and encouraged other victims of domestic violence and sexual crimes to come forward and seek justice.
Detective Constable Amy Stewart from Wigan district commended the victim for her bravery and expressed hope that this conviction will empower other survivors. She emphasized the importance of reaching out for help if you are experiencing abuse and reassured individuals that support is available.
