Drama Teacher Craig Smith Jailed for Sexual Activity With Three Pupils

A former drama teacher in South Lanarkshire has been jailed for engaging in sexual activity with three teenage girls while working at a secondary school.

Craig Smith, 43, preyed on the girls who were in fifth and sixth year between 2015 and 2016. He was sentenced to two years and three months imprisonment after pleading guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Smith exploited his position of trust by sending compliments and indecent images via Facebook. Two girls reported physical encounters with Smith in the school's drama department, including kissing, touching, and sexual acts. One girl, who was prone to panic attacks, received messages initially appearing concerned for her well-being, but they quickly escalated to a sexual nature. Smith even sent a naked image of himself during these conversations.

A third girl, aged 14 at the time, reported receiving inappropriate messages and requests from Smith in 2018. This prompted an investigation that led to Smith's suspension. The case highlights the importance of vigilance and reporting any suspicious behavior by individuals in positions of authority within schools.
