Prolific Sex Offender Jailed for Possession of 90,000 Child Sexual Abuse Images

Daniel Tunney, a 42-year-old from Crewe, Cheshire, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for possessing over 90,000 indecent images of children.

Cheshire Police launched an investigation in September 2022 after receiving intelligence that Tunney was accessing indecent images online. Officers from the Online Child Abuse Investigation Team conducted a search of his home and seized three unregistered digital devices: a mobile phone, a hard drive, and a memory card.

A forensic analysis of these devices revealed thousands of images and videos depicting child sexual abuse, including 603 category A images, 240 category A videos, 735 category B images, 40 category B videos, 46,045 category C images, and 13 category C videos. Additionally, Tunney possessed 104 images and 36 videos of extreme pornography.

Tunney pleaded guilty to the charges despite remaining silent during police interviews. The sheer volume of evidence against him left him with no choice but to admit his guilt.

Detective Sergeant Nathanael Johnston stated that Tunney posed a significant risk to children and that his actions were deplorable. Detective Constable Meg Griffithes emphasized that online child sexual exploitation is not victimless and that Cheshire Police are dedicated to pursuing those involved in this harmful activity.
