Convicted Sex Offender Avoids Registration Due to "Too Far to Walk"
Daniel Waddington, a convicted sex offender, found himself in trouble with the law after repeatedly failing to register his details with the police. His excuse? It was too far to walk.
Waddington, 29, lived in a tent in the woods, "four miles from anywhere else," and claimed that walking the hour to the police station and back was simply too much of a hassle.
He had been convicted in March 2021 of making indecent images of children and had been ordered to register as a sex offender for five years. However, he failed to notify his details on multiple occasions, claiming his homelessness and lack of transportation made it difficult.
Despite receiving text messages from the police, Waddington ignored them and continued to avoid registering. He also breached his community order multiple times, missing appointments with the probation service.
Waddington's defense argued that he was "suffering problems" at the time and had "removed himself from society as far as he could." However, Judge Tahir Khan KC was not convinced and sentenced Waddington to a 15-month suspended prison sentence and 15 days of rehabilitation.
The sexual harm prevention order and notification requirements will remain in place, ensuring that Waddington continues to register his whereabouts with the police.
