David Bottomley
Age: 60
Town: Merseyside
Convicted: 12/04/2022
Former karate instructor raped a schoolgirl and a woman.
A former karate instructor who raped a schoolgirl and a woman was today labelled a "monster" by a judge.
David Bottomley, 58, had presented himself as a pillar of the community, working at a YMCA, as a coastguard, and as a prison security officer. However, a Liverpool Crown Court trial exposed him as a "violent and abusive" rapist and paedophile, leading to a 14-year prison sentence.
One of Bottomley's victims, who called him a "monster," had watched an episode of BBC Crimewatch in 2017 that triggered memories of her own abuse. She disclosed to her mother, who then encouraged her to contact the police.
The schoolgirl, now an adult, revealed that Bottomley had raped her when she was 12. The first victim, who had not initially reported the abuse, also came forward after learning of the other allegations.
Bottomley, who had run martial arts classes and worked as a doorman in Southport, denied all wrongdoing, forcing his victims to relive their traumatic experiences at his trial in January. He was found guilty of historic sex offences against the first woman, including rape and assault causing actual bodily harm.
The first victim, in a statement read in court, said Bottomley had "permanently destroyed" her trust in people and left her feeling "damaged, spoiled, and degraded." She described him as a "bully, a coward, and a monster."
Bottomley was also convicted of raping the schoolgirl, as well as indecency with a child and indecent assault. In her victim statement, she said the abuse would stay with her until the day she dies.
Despite being acquitted of other sex assault charges, Bottomley collapsed in the dock after the verdicts were returned, requiring medical attention.
Judge David Aubrey, QC, deemed Bottomley a "violent and abusive" man, noting the severity of his attacks, particularly the deliberate kick to the first victim's jaw while wearing steel-toe capped boots.
Judge Aubrey also condemned Bottomley for manipulating his victims, giving the schoolgirl money after the abuse and then attempting to mislead the court with rehearsed testimony.
Sentencing Bottomley, Judge Aubrey stated, "You have shown no remorse whatsoever. You have left your victims scarred for life and in effect have imposed a life sentence upon each." He sentenced Bottomley to four years for the offences against the first woman and a consecutive 10 years with an extended one year on licence for the offences against the schoolgirl. This means Bottomley must serve at least eight years and eight months before he can apply for parole.
