Disgraced Boxer Found Guilty of Sexual Assault
David Davidson, 57, has been found guilty of sexually assaulting amateur athletes in the 1980s. The attacks, which took place between 1981 and 1984, were finally brought to justice 24 years after one of his victims first reported the abuse to the police.
Davidson, who now resides in England and runs his own company, denied all wrongdoing at the High Court in Paisley. The jury heard that he attacked his first victim between 1981 and 1983 at a property in Glasgow's Ruchill. He went on to abuse a second victim on multiple occasions in 1984 in the Kildrum area of Cumbernauld and various locations in Glasgow.
One of Davidson's attacks occurred after a boxing fundraiser to raise money for the Doyle family, who were victims of a fatal house fire during the height of Glasgow's notorious Ice Cream Wars. The fire, which occurred on April 16, 1984, claimed the lives of James Doyle (53), his sons James (23), Andrew (18), Tony (14), his daughter Christina Halleron (25), and her 18-month-old son Mark. The blaze ripped through their home in Glasgow's Ruchazie at around 2 am.
Thomas "TC" Campbell and Joe Steele were convicted of murder in connection with the fire, but they were later cleared.
Davidson's defence lawyer, Mark Moir, argued that the sexual interactions were consensual and that they were "young men of 18, 19, 20 exploring their sexuality". However, the jury rejected this claim and convicted Davidson on both indecent assault charges.
Sentencing has been adjourned until next month to allow for background reports and for Davidson "to put his affairs in order" due to the prospect of a custodial sentence. It was revealed that Davidson was also convicted of a sexual offense in a separate case in 1985.
