Man Jailed for Attempting to Meet Girl After Grooming Online

David Flavell, 39, was sentenced to 14 months in prison for breaching a sexual harm prevention order. Flavell, who has a history of sexual offenses against children, used a website for train enthusiasts to engage in conversations with a 13-year-old girl. He offered her support, complimented her, and even professed his love for her, despite knowing her age.

A moderator on the website, Rail Cam UK, noticed Flavell's inappropriate interactions with the girl and alerted the police. Flavell, who had been released from prison early on license, then moved the conversation to another website, where he arranged to meet the girl. He travelled from Cornwall to Birmingham, only to find the girl with her mother and police officers.

Flavell attempted to flee but was arrested. He claimed in interviews that he was trying to help the girl with her bullying issues and that his intentions were good. However, the court recognized the clear signs of grooming and deemed Flavell's actions a deliberate breach of his sexual harm prevention order.

The judge, Recorder Mathew Turner, noted the significant distance Flavell travelled to meet the girl and emphasized the vulnerability of the child. He also pointed out that Flavell was released on license for less than a year before committing this offense.

Flavell's current sentence will not affect his release date for the original sentence of August next year, as he was recalled to prison for the previous offense when he was arrested.
