Drunk sex offender attacked Wetherspoons staff after being asked to leave.
Man Jailed for Assaulting and Threatening Staff at Wetherspoons
Dean Newland, 33, of HMP Altcourse but formerly of no fixed address, was sentenced to 36 weeks in prison at Liverpool Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
Newland appeared before the court on three counts of assault for an incident at the Richard John Blackler branch of JD Wetherspoon on Great Charlotte Street, Liverpool city centre, as well as one count of failing to comply with sex offenders register notification requirements.
The court heard that on October 10, around 11:45pm, Newland was asked to leave the pub by a female member of staff after he was seen asking other patrons for money and behaving aggressively. He then sat at a table with a half-finished drink, refused to leave, and poured the drink onto the floor.
When a male colleague approached to assist, Newland threatened the female staff member, claiming his sister would "assault her." He then assaulted her by pushing her in the chest and touching her breast area. He continued to be aggressive until police arrived and arrested him.
In mitigation, Newland's defense attorney, Amy Butler, stated that he had been using alcohol addiction recovery programs while in prison and that alcohol was his problem. She claimed that Newland was a different person than the one who committed the offenses and had completed a 12-step program and begun a mentoring program.
The court was informed that Newland has failed to comply with notification requirements six times previously, and this latest offense occurred while he was subject to two suspended sentences for previous sexual offenses.
Judge James Hatton stated that Newland's record of convictions was a major problem and that he had repeatedly failed to comply with court orders. He activated the two previous suspended sentences of eight weeks and 12 weeks, respectively, for breaching the sexual offenses notification order.
For the latest breach of the notification order, Newland was sentenced to an additional 16 weeks, to be served consecutively. For the three assault charges, he received four weeks each, to be served concurrently. He was also issued a community order prohibiting him from possessing alcohol in Liverpool city centre for two years.
