Dewan Gazi Jailed for Six Years After Attacking and Sexually Assaulting Woman in Manchester
A man has been sentenced to six years in prison for the sexual assault and attack of a woman in Manchester.
Dewan Gazi, 44, from Croxdale Walk, Blackley, was found guilty at Manchester Crown Court of two counts of sexual assault and one count of section 47 assault. The incident occurred on Sunday, July 28, 2024, shortly after midnight.
The victim had been enjoying a night out with friends in Middleton when she was walking home alone. Gazi confronted her, grabbed her arms, and began touching her inappropriately over her clothes. Fearing for her safety, the woman shouted for help and punched Gazi, who continued his assault, pulling at her shorts before pushing her into nearby bushes.
A couple living nearby heard the commotion and intervened, questioning Gazi, who falsely claimed to be helping the victim. He fled when confronted but was later apprehended by police.
The victim sustained injuries, including pain, bruising, and soreness in her fist from punching Gazi. CCTV footage played a crucial role in identifying Gazi's vehicle and showed him working at a takeaway in Middleton, watching his victim walk past before following her in his car.
Gazi has been sentenced to six years imprisonment. The victim has also been granted an indefinite restraining order against him, and he will be subject to indefinite sex offender notification requirements.
The couple who intervened have received a bravery award from Greater Manchester Police for their actions in helping the victim and chasing away Gazi.
