Dilbirin Cheikhe, 22, was sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison for sexually assaulting and raping a teenage girl in Sheffield. The judge, Recorder Taryn Turner, stated that Cheikhe, who entered the UK illegally in 2020, will likely be deported after serving two-thirds of his sentence.

The court heard how Cheikhe attacked the girl shortly after meeting her for the first time, ignoring her pleas to stop. The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, described the impact of the abuse, saying she had been deprived of her teenage years and felt unable to leave her house. She also suffers from anxiety, derealisation, and depersonalisation.

Cheikhe was found guilty of two counts of rape and four counts of sexual assault in March 2024. Despite denying the offences, he expressed some remorse for his actions.

Recorder Turner acknowledged the significant impact of the abuse on the victim and emphasized that Cheikhe's actions were premeditated. She highlighted that Cheikhe was learning English at the time of the offences but understood the meaning of "no" and "yes."

Cheikhe will be required to register as a sex offender for life and is subject to a restraining order prohibiting contact with the victim.
