Former Rugby League Player Dion Aiye Sexually Assaults Woman Outside Whitehaven Bar
A former Whitehaven Rugby League player, Dion Aiye, has been placed on the Sex Offender Register after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a woman outside a town center bar.
The incident occurred in the early hours of May 26th when Aiye, aged 37, reached around the victim from behind while she was waiting outside Shakers bar with a friend. He sexually assaulted her over her clothing.
The victim immediately pushed Aiye away and told him to stop. She was able to identify him due to his distinctive pink cowboy hat. Despite being rebuffed, Aiye remained nearby. Door staff intervened when the victim's friend expressed concern for her well-being, and the victim confirmed she wished to pursue a complaint.
In court, Mr. Rogerson read an impact statement from the victim, detailing the anxiety and fear the assault caused. She expressed worry about encountering Aiye in their close-knit community and described how the incident impacted her work and social life.
Aiye's defense attorney, Marion Weir, acknowledged the seriousness of the offense while emphasizing that Aiye stopped immediately upon being asked and deeply regretted his actions. She highlighted the impact on Aiye's rugby career and expressed his understanding of the need for change.
Judge Michael Fanning sentenced Aiye to an 18-month community order, including 200 hours of unpaid work and five rehabilitation activity days to address his offending behavior. He also placed Aiye on the Sex Offender Register for five years.
The judge emphasized that Aiye's actions stemmed from a sense of entitlement and made it clear that such behavior is unacceptable.
