Man Jailed for Rape After Police Stumble Upon Attack

Anthony Donald Raymond, 33, of Amesbury, was sentenced to nine years in prison for rape on October 20th, 2023.

The incident occurred in March 2022 when Raymond offered a woman a ride home. Instead of taking her directly, he diverted to a remote location in Wiltshire and parked. There, he forcibly removed her clothing and raped her.

Fortunately, police officers on routine patrol happened upon the scene. Raymond managed to escape, but the officers captured key information and evidence on their body-worn cameras. This footage, along with the victim's account, secured a guilty verdict after a week-long trial at Winchester Crown Court.

Raymond was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life.

Detective Constable Martyn Powell of South CID stated, "I would like to praise the victim in this case for having the courage and conviction to see this through a difficult 18 months and a week-long trial. The officers at the scene who came across this incident captured key information and evidence on their body-worn cameras, which was able to be produced to the court. I hope that this sentence inspires others who have suffered sexual violence to come forward and report incidents to the police, where we will endeavor to support you."
