70-Year-Old Bradford Man Jailed for Rape of Teenager
Edwin Gill, of Dulverton Grove, Holme Wood, Bradford, has been sentenced to over eight years in prison for raping a teenager. Initially pleading not guilty, Gill claimed the victim consented to the act. However, following legal advice, he changed his plea to guilty at Bradford Crown Court on March 14.
Prosecutor Jonathan Sharp revealed that Gill initially asked to cuddle the teenager before proceeding to touch their bottom and inner thigh, ultimately leading to the rape. The victim, left shocked and feeling helpless, confided in their family about the attack, prompting Gill's arrest.
During interrogation, Gill initially denied any involvement in the rape. He later admitted to having sexual intercourse with the teenager, claiming it was consensual. However, the victim's impact statement, read aloud in court, described their experience of panic attacks, sleep difficulties, and struggles with concentration following the assault.
Judge Ahmed Nadim commended the victim's "courage and fortitude" in assisting the authorities in bringing Gill to justice. Laura McBride, Gill's defense attorney, conveyed his genuine remorse, stating, "He is truly sorry for what has happened. He can't put into words the shame and regret that he's felt."
In sentencing Gill to eight years and nine months imprisonment, Judge Nadim emphasized Gill's violation of moral and legal boundaries, stating, "A child's carefree days have been marred." He added that the victim endured "degradation and humiliation" at Gill's hands.
A life-long sexual harm prevention order has been imposed on Gill, and he must register as a sex offender for the same duration.
