Met Police Detective Found Guilty of Child Sex Offenses
A Metropolitan Police detective has been found guilty of attempting to meet a 13-year-old girl for sex while "on duty working from home."
DC Francois Olwage, 52, traveled 75 miles to meet "Caitlin," who was actually an undercover officer. Olwage had groomed the person online and was arrested at a McDonald's in Basingstoke, Hampshire.
Police discovered two condoms, lubricant, and erectile dysfunction tablets in his bag. A box of chocolates was also found, believed to be a gift for the "girl." Olwage was about to buy a McFlurry for her.
The counter-terrorism officer had been working from home when he made the journey from his home in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, in October. Olwage engaged in explicit messaging over two weeks, revealing his intentions to perform sex acts on the "girl".
The undercover officer used the online chat forum Lycos under the name Smile Bear, before moving to Whatsapp and calling the girl Caitlin. Olwage, a 19-year veteran of the Metropolitan Police, had booked a hotel room for the meeting.
Winchester Crown Court found Olwage guilty of three child sex offenses.
Met Detective Chief Superintendent Donna Smith stated last year that Olwage's arrest was the result of a thorough investigation by Hertfordshire Police. Olwage claimed he never believed Smile Bear was a 13-year-old girl, insisting it was an adult engaging in a fantasy. He denied any sexual interest in children.
Olwage was found guilty of attempted sexual communication with a child, attempting to cause/incite a girl aged 13 to engage in sexual activity, and attempting to meet a girl under the age of 16 following grooming. He admitted to abusing his police powers for sexual gratification during the trial.
Judge Jane Miller QC ordered the jury to find Olwage not guilty of arranging/facilitating the commission of a child sex offense. He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced this month.
