Gagandeep Gulati Jailed For Rape After CCTV Evidence

A rapist who preyed on a young woman during a night out in Leicester has been sentenced to six years in prison.

Gagandeep Gulati, 20, was caught on CCTV thanks to the perseverance of Detective Constable Matt Smith. In September last year, Gulati found his victim alone in Jubilee Square and coerced her into going to Castle Gardens where he raped and sexually assaulted her. He filmed the horrific incident on his phone and sent clips to others.

Detective Constable Smith painstakingly reviewed CCTV footage over a week to identify Gulati. When he visited the accommodation where Gulati was staying, he immediately recognized him from the footage and arrested him. Despite Gulati's attempts to claim he had been sexually assaulted by the victim, he was charged with one count of rape, one count of assault by penetration, one count of sexual assault and one count of sharing an intimate film.

Following a trial at Leicester Crown Court, Gulati was found guilty of all offenses and sentenced to six years' imprisonment. He was also placed on the sex offender register for life.
