Convicted: 21/03/2022

Nex assault on woman at Hull Caffè Nero after he was refused free drink.

A wheelchair user was jailed for 16 months after a violent outburst at a coffee shop in Hull, England.

Gerald Kelly, 62, admitted to sexual assault and three counts of assault on December 21. The court heard that Kelly had been demanding free drinks at Caffe Nero and became abusive when his request was denied. He then proceeded to shout obscenities at staff and customers, including racial slurs and threats of violence.

Kelly, who had a history of violence and was banned from the coffee shop, refused to leave when asked. He lashed out at security staff, hitting them with his wheelchair and using it to push them. He also verbally abused and sexually assaulted a woman, telling her "I will f*** you. It's been a while since I had a girl."

The court heard that Kelly had a long criminal history dating back to 1980, with over 170 convictions including sexual assault, assault, public order offenses, and breaches of antisocial behavior orders.

Judge Mark Bury described Kelly's behavior as "simply intolerable" and called the sexual assault "grossly unpleasant." He sentenced Kelly to 16 months in prison and ordered him to register as a sex offender for seven years.

Kelly's defense attorney argued that he was remorseful and struggling with alcohol addiction. However, the judge made it clear that Kelly's actions were unacceptable and that he needed to be held accountable for his behavior.
