Jailed Paedophile Ian Smith Dies Behind Bars After Contracting Covid

A convicted sex offender serving a 21-year prison sentence for abusing children has died behind bars from complications related to Covid-19.

Ian Smith, 62, was imprisoned in 2021 for a string of offences against young children, including a girl as young as six. He contracted Covid while incarcerated at HMP Stafford and died three days later after being admitted to hospital with a high temperature and vomiting.

Despite receiving two Covid-19 vaccinations prior to imprisonment, Smith's death was attributed to the virus, with his pre-existing condition of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) listed as a contributing factor. Smith had also been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a blood cancer, but declined treatment.

An investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman found that the care Smith received at HMP Stafford was of a "good standard" and equivalent to what he would have received in the community. A clinical reviewer confirmed that Smith's COPD was managed appropriately throughout his time in prison, and there were no concerns regarding his clinical care related to Covid-19.

Prior to his imprisonment, Smith had befriended women with children in Middlesbrough, gaining their trust before committing his crimes. This marked his third conviction for sex offenses, which also included indecent assaults on both male and female victims and possession of indecent images of children.
