Man Escapes Jail After Sending Explicit Messages to Undercover Police Officer Posing as Child

Jack Bowker, 29, was spared a prison sentence despite engaging in sexually explicit conversations with an account he believed belonged to a 12-year-old girl on Snapchat. The messages, which ranged from discussions about spanking to oral sex, were sent between July and November 2021.

The "girl's" account was actually operated by police, who obtained a warrant and searched Bowker's home on November 9, 2021. While electronic equipment was seized, Bowker was not arrested until later.

During a police interview in April 2022, Bowker admitted to sending the messages, and subsequently pleaded guilty to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child. He was sentenced to a six-month prison term, suspended for 18 months, on November 9, 2023, at Liverpool Magistrates' Court.

Despite his actions, Bowker insisted he did not consider himself a pedophile. The judge, District Judge Timothy Boswell, acknowledged this, stating that some offenders struggle to accept their own actions.

"You do not regard yourself as a paedophile," Judge Boswell said. "You knew what you were doing."

In addition to the suspended sentence, Bowker was ordered to undergo a 30-day rehabilitation program, perform 160 hours of unpaid work, and abide by a seven-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

The Sexual Harm Prevention Order mandates that Bowker notify police of any device with internet access and prohibits him from deleting or altering his internet history.
