Chesterfield Sex Offender Jailed

Jake Mills, 21, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for sexually assaulting and attempting to rape a young woman, as well as exposing himself to two elderly women.

The attacks took place on separate occasions in Chesterfield, with the first incident occurring in November 2020 and the second in September 2021. Mills targeted the elderly women because they were more vulnerable, according to Judge Nirmal Shant QC.

In the first incident, Mills followed a young woman into an alleyway, kissed her, and tried to force her to perform oral sex. He was released on bail but then exposed himself to two elderly women on the same day in September 2021.

Judge Shant said the victim of the attempted rape was deeply traumatized by the attack, suffering from panic attacks, loss of confidence, anxiety, and depression. She has had nightmares and flashbacks and has had to move home.

"This was an attack on a lone female in the street in the early hours of the morning," Judge Shant said. "It has had a profound impact on her. It will take her years to get back to normality."

Regarding the incidents involving the elderly women, Judge Shant said Mills had "taken some pleasure" in exposing himself to them.

"It would have been evident to you that one of (the victims) was in her late 70s and the other was in her 80s," Judge Shant said. "I take the view that you decided to approach them because they were more vulnerable than the younger lady. They were hugely traumatised by what happened - it's completely changed their lives."

Mills was found guilty of attempted rape and two counts of exposure. He was ordered to serve at least two-thirds of his eight-year sentence in custody and will be subject to an extended licence period of four years.

Mills was also made subject of an 18-year sexual harm prevention order, banning him from approaching lone females he does not know and from driving any vehicle without registering its details with the police.
