Portland Man Jailed for Seven Years for Rape of 11-Year-Old Girl

James Connell Loveman, 23, was sentenced today at Bournemouth Crown Court for the rape of an 11-year-old girl in Portland. The attack occurred in August of last year near the Old Windmill in Easton.

Loveman was convicted of charges of rape and assault by penetration following a trial in September. He had previously admitted to a charge of sexual assault of a female under the age of 13.

The incident took place on August 31st, 2019, around 1:30 am. The victim, who was with her 14-year-old friend, encountered Loveman while walking in Easton Square. They walked with him to the Old Windmill, where they chatted for a time before the victim's friend left. Loveman then sexually assaulted and raped the girl before fleeing on his bicycle.

Following an investigation by Dorset Police's Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT), Loveman's DNA was found on the victim's clothing, leading to his arrest on September 7th, 2019.

The victim stated that the incident had terrified her and she came forward to prevent Loveman from harming others. She also expressed pain over comments made, both online and offline, implying she or her family were at fault for what happened.

Detective Inspector Wayne Seymour of MCIT praised the victim's courage in coming forward and supporting the investigation. He expressed gratitude to the victim and those involved in the case for helping bring Loveman to justice.

"This was a horrific sexual attack of a young victim," Seymour said. "I hope this case demonstrates that we will support victims who report sexual offences and do all we can to identify the culprits and hold them accountable for their actions."

Julia Woodward, CPS Wessex Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Senior Crown Prosecutor, also commended the victim's bravery throughout the investigation and prosecution.

"The victim in this case was incredibly brave throughout the investigation and prosecution," Woodward said. "She was courageous in contacting the police immediately to report what had happened to her, which meant that Loveman could be identified and arrested quickly."

The authorities urge anyone who has been a victim of rape or sexual assault to report it to Dorset Police via 101. For emergencies, dial 999. Those who prefer not to report directly to the police can contact The Shores, the sexual assault referral centre for Dorset.
