The court heard that Furness repeatedly sexually assaulted both girls, manipulating them into silence. However, one of the girls eventually found the courage to tell a family member, who then contacted the police.

Furness was sentenced to a total of 21-and-a-half years in prison, but the sentences were served concurrently. This meant he received an overall prison sentence of five-and-a-half years, with the judge ordering him to serve half of that sentence before being considered for release.
