John Mooney Stalked and Sexually Assaulted Woman in Carlisle

John Mooney, a 46-year-old man from Carlisle, was sentenced for stalking and sexually assaulting a woman he barely knew.

Carlisle Magistrates' Court heard that Mooney's disturbing behavior began after he moved to a new area in June of last year. He persistently pursued the victim, making unwanted personal advances and repeatedly asking her out despite her clear refusals. Mooney also disregarded her requests to stop asking about her personal life.

The situation escalated when Mooney put his arm around the woman and touched her inappropriately during an encounter. Following this incident, he apologized in a letter but then appeared outside her home the next day. Even after these events, Mooney continued to greet the woman with inappropriate remarks.

Mooney's defense lawyer argued that the offenses were isolated incidents stemming from a difficult period following his separation from his wife. However, the court recognized the severity of his actions and imposed a 16-week jail sentence, suspended for a year. Mooney was also placed on the Sex Offender Register for seven years, ordered to pay costs and a victim surcharge, and prohibited from contacting the victim.
