Rapist groped a woman and offered her cash for sexual favours.
A convicted rapist has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman and offering her cash for sexual favors.
John Rollason, 68, was found guilty by a jury of assaulting his victim, who was left "disgusted, shocked and angry," a court heard. Rollason was previously jailed for 30 years for raping a woman after attacking her and driving her to Dartmoor.
A judge has adjourned sentencing for the new offense pending probation and medical reports, but warned that Rollason could be going back to prison. Rollason, a grandfather, suffers from Type 2 diabetes and uses an oxygen cylinder, the court heard.
The victim testified that Rollason pressed his head against her chest and reached under her shirt, holding her close so she couldn't break free. Ed Bailey, prosecuting for the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "She felt disgusted, shocked and angry by what happened." He added: "He offered her some cash if she would let him continue." The court heard that the victim managed to escape and flee the scene.
Bailey stated that she confided in some family and friends about the assault but did not report it to the police until over 18 months later in August 2020. Rollason, of Southern Close, Weston Mill, denied the sexual assault, which occurred on November 29, 2018. He claimed that he accidentally pressed his head against her chest but admitted complimenting her on her breasts.
Rollason denied groping the victim, arguing that he had a "smutty sense of humor" and was a "Benny Hill" type, referring to the risqué comedian popular from the 1950s to the 1980s. However, the jury found Rollason guilty by a unanimous verdict in less than two hours.
Judge Robert Linford released Rollason on bail to return for sentencing on April 13. He told the defendant: "The fact that I am ordering reports and readmitting you to bail is no indication whatsoever of the sentence you will receive. You may leave and meet your wife outside."
During the trial, Bailey informed the jury that Rollason had been jailed for six years for rape in 1992, a fact the jury was not previously aware of. He explained: "He was in Union Street posing as a taxi driver. He collected a female fare, drove her up to Dartmoor, coshed her over the head and then raped her."
