Wigan Man Jailed for Making Hundreds of Indecent Images of Children

A Wigan borough man has been jailed for making hundreds of indecent images of children.

Karl Ashton, 36, of Rugby Road, Leigh, pleaded guilty to possessing the images just as his trial was set to begin in October.

Ashton admitted to making four category A images (the most serious), five category B images, and 133 category C images between October 4 and November 13, 2018. He also admitted to making three category A images, one category B image, and 31 category C images between October 20 and November 6, 2022.

A charge of perverting the course of justice was ordered to lie on file.

Ashton was sentenced to 21 months in prison by Recorder Peter Atherton at Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court. He will be on the sex offenders' register for 10 years and subject to a sexual harm prevention order for an indefinite period. He must also pay a £187 victim surcharge. The devices on which the images were found will be forfeited and destroyed.
