Justice Served: Child Sex Offender Jailed for 13 Years
Kenneth Runciman, 66, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for abusing two young girls decades ago. The former resident of Ayton, Berwickshire, was found guilty of 11 counts of indecent assault and two of indecency with a child by a jury at Newcastle Crown Court.
The court heard powerful statements from both victims, outlining the lasting impact of Runciman's abuse. One victim described how she coped by pushing the trauma to the back of her mind, but it continued to affect her throughout her life. She said, "I felt disgusting, like it was my fault. I wanted a normal life, not one where I was constantly worried about the next abuse happening."
The other victim, demonstrating remarkable strength, declared, "I don't feel like a victim, I feel brave, strong and justified. My conscience is clear and I'm glad I don't have to live with yours."
Judge Tim Gittins, during sentencing, called Runciman's actions "sickening behaviour" and condemned his attempts to discredit the victims by claiming they had ulterior motives for reporting the abuse. The judge praised the victims' courage and resilience, stating, "It says something for their strength of character and determination that they have been finally vindicated, having lived with the burden of your abuse while you have got on with your life...as a man of apparently good character and respected in the community."
He further described the abuse as "vile" and commended the victims' powerful statements, which "make it clear you blighted their childhoods." The judge acknowledged the impact of the abuse, stating, "No sentence can replace two lost childhoods."
Runciman, who continues to deny the offences, will be required to sign the sex offenders register for life.
