Child Rapist Jailed for Over 13 Years

Mark Smith, 30, has been sentenced to 13 years and 6 months in prison for rape and assault by penetration. He must also serve an extended licence period of one year.

Smith forced a young girl to engage in a sexual act at an address on Canvey on June 4, 2016. He threatened her and told her it was their "little secret," leaving her feeling embarrassed and scared to tell anyone.

The victim experienced significant mental health struggles as a result of the assault and sought professional help. In August 2019, she disclosed the offences to Essex Police.

Smith was arrested in September 2019 and initially denied remembering the incident. He was later charged and admitted the offences at Basildon Crown Court on March 30, 2022.

Smith was also sentenced for a separate count of causing a child to engage in sexual activity without consent. This offence was committed in January 2022 while he was on court bail.

Det Con Victoria Leese, the investigating officer, praised the victim's courage and bravery for coming forward. She described Smith's actions as "despicable" and stated that he has been held accountable.

Leese also expressed gratitude to the victim's family for their support and trust throughout the process.
