Predator Jailed for Abusing Teenager

A 36-year-old man, Matthew Helliwell, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for sexually abusing a teenage boy. The abuse occurred on three separate occasions, with Helliwell taking advantage of the boy's infatuation with him.

The victim, now an adult, bravely faced Helliwell in court and read out a statement detailing the impact of the abuse. He described how he had suffered from depression and anxiety since the events, but found strength in coming forward and sharing his story.

Helliwell, from Chesterfield, was found guilty of three counts of sexual activity with a child following a trial. The court heard that he attempted suicide in the court's cells after the jury's verdicts.

In mitigation, Helliwell's lawyer highlighted his lack of previous convictions and the progress he had made while in custody. She also mentioned the death of his partner last year.

Judge Jeremy Richardson KC acknowledged the impact of the abuse on the victim, describing it as "grooming" and a "breach of trust." He also noted that while the abuse was repeated, it was limited to three separate occasions.

Helliwell was also issued a restraining order prohibiting him from contacting the victim for 10 years, and notification requirements indefinitely.
