Action for Children Sues Former Employee for Sexual Abuse of Children
Action for Children, a prominent charity, is reportedly pursuing legal action against Maurice Berry, a 67-year-old sex offender, who was convicted of preying on young girls at May Lodge Children's Home in Scarborough.
Berry, who previously resided in North Somercotes, Lincolnshire, was sentenced to 13 years in prison in 2019 following a trial at York Crown Court. The court heard that he abused his position as deputy manager at the children's home, engaging in acts of sexual assault, including climbing into the beds of the victims at night, exposing himself, and attempting to rape one of them.
Berry was apprehended at his Lincolnshire home in 2017 after one or more of his victims came forward to the police. Following his conviction, the two younger victims, now adults, initiated a claim for personal injury against Action for Children, alleging the charity was liable for Berry's offenses.
As a result, Action for Children is seeking to recover nearly £160,000 in compensation and legal fees from Berry. The charity has reportedly attempted to reach an agreement with Berry, but he has not engaged in the process. Consequently, they have resorted to legal action as a last resort.
In response to a request for comment, Action for Children stated that the matter is subject to ongoing legal proceedings and they are unable to provide further details at this time.
