Child Abuser Has Sentenced Doubled Following Appeal.
Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Rape and Other Offences
A man who was originally sentenced to 10 years in prison for rape offences has had his sentence increased to 20 years following an appeal by the Crown Prosecution Service.
The original sentence, which also included a four-year term for other offences and a one-year extended licence period, was deemed unduly lenient by the Court of Appeal. The man was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life and subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for life.
The victim's family had expressed disappointment with the initial sentence, and Detective Constable Oliver Hunter, the officer in the case, requested a review under the Unduly Lenient Sentences scheme. The Crown Prosecution Service supported the appeal, and the Attorney General's application was heard at the Court of Appeal on Friday.
The Court of Appeal quashed the original sentence and imposed a new sentence of 20 years, including a one-year extended licence. The sex offender conditions remain unchanged.
The offences, which occurred over a six-month period, came to light in December 2022 when the victim disclosed the abuse to a friend. Officers from Leeds District Safeguarding Unit provided support to the victim during video-recorded interviews and conducted thorough investigations, including securing forensic evidence.
