Man Jailed for Nine Years for Raping Teenage Girl
A 29-year-old man, Michael Murray, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for raping a teenage girl after following her off a bus in Bristol.
The attack took place on Stapleton Road in the Easton area on January 9th. Murray pleaded guilty to rape and a separate charge of common assault at Bristol Crown Court on April 7th.
Murray, who has no fixed address, will also serve six years on an extended licence following his nine-year sentence.
Avon and Somerset Police were able to identify Murray through CCTV footage thanks to a detailed description provided by the victim.
Murray was also given a concurrent four-month prison sentence for assaulting a second victim with a cigarette lighter after she rejected his advances. He received indefinite restraining orders against both victims and will remain on the sex offenders register indefinitely.
Det Sgt Stuart Toms stated that Murray poses a significant risk to women, particularly teenage girls, and expressed relief that he will be incarcerated for an extended period.
"Sexual assaults by strangers are rare in Avon and Somerset, but when they do happen, we do everything we can to identify offenders and bring them to justice," he added.
