Man Jailed for Kidnapping and Sexually Assaulting Teenager Outside Nightclub
A 34-year-old man has been sentenced to seven years and six months in prison for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl after spotting her outside a nightclub.
Michael Owen, from Hindley, approached the intoxicated teenager outside a club in Leigh at 5am on March 13, 2022, under the guise of helping her. He then helped her into a taxi, instructing the driver to take them to his home on Bridgewater Street.
The victim, who was heavily intoxicated, recalled waking up in Owen's bed partially clothed and screaming to go home. Owen, however, told her he was simply looking after her.
Her father, who had obtained Owen's address from the taxi driver, arrived at the house and found his daughter being held against her will. He immediately contacted the police while Owen simultaneously called 999 to report someone banging on his door.
Police officers arrived shortly after and arrested Owen, who was subsequently charged with kidnap and assault.
Owen pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court. The judge deemed him a dangerous offender and imposed an extended license period of four years, along with a lifetime restraining order against the victim.
Detective Sergeant Chris Preston of Wigan CID praised the victim and her family for their cooperation during the investigation. He stated, "Owen is a dangerous individual who preyed on this young girl for his own use, under the guise of being helpful and looking out for her." He also encouraged victims of sexual assault to come forward and report their experiences to the police.
Greater Manchester Police urged anyone who has been a victim of rape or sexual assault to seek help and report it to the authorities.
