Man Jailed for Sexually Assaulting 10-Year-Old Girl on Christmas Day

Nigel Yates, 57, a convicted sex offender, was sentenced to 42 months in prison for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl on Christmas Day 2022. The judge described Yates as having "a deviant and unhealthy" interest in young girls.

Yates, from Llechryd, Cardigan, pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual assault at Swansea Crown Court. The victim's mother stated that her daughter was still in shock and affected by the abuse, despite putting on a brave face.

Yates has a history of sexual offenses, including convictions for indecent assault and making indecent images of children. He had previously refused to disclose these convictions to others.

In mitigation, Yates' defense attorney stated that his client was battling alcohol addiction and was motivated to receive help. However, Judge Huw Rees emphasized that Yates' actions demonstrated a persistent unhealthy interest in young girls.

In addition to the prison sentence, Yates was subject to a 10-year restraining order and a 10-year sexual harm prevention order. He must also register as a sex offender indefinitely.
