Man Avoids Jail After Downloading Hundreds of Child Abuse Images

A man who downloaded hundreds of indecent images of children from the internet has been spared a prison sentence. Paul Brentnall, 46, from Mossbank, was caught after his estranged wife discovered the images on his computer following his departure from their Wiltshire home.

When authorities arrested Brentnall at his new residence in Shetland, they found he had continued his illicit activities. Prosecutor Lynne Henderson informed Swindon Crown Court that in late 2006, Brentnall left his wife, leaving behind a personal computer and a laptop. His wife, upon finding disturbing content, sought assistance from a family friend, who promptly alerted the police after discovering indecent pictures on the machines.

Officers uncovered 372 indecent images, including 24 categorized as the most severe, on the computers. In November 2007, Wiltshire police, with the approval of the Shetland sheriff, apprehended Brentnall in Shetland. Despite assuring officers that no further images existed on his new computer, a search revealed an additional 32 indecent images, including two in the most serious categories.

Brentnall pleaded guilty to one count of possessing and three counts of making indecent images of children. While acknowledging additional charges related to similar images in Scotland, the court noted that those could only be prosecuted in that jurisdiction.

Defense attorney Michael Cullum argued that Brentnall had admitted guilt at the earliest opportunity. The court heard that much of the material had been sent to him by individuals he communicated with online. Cullum also highlighted Brentnall's sleep apnea condition, requiring him to use a sleep mask. He emphasized his client's willingness to seek help and the support he received from his new partner.

Judge William Hart sentenced Brentnall to a community order, including 18 months of supervision, 120 hours of unpaid work, and a £250 court fee. Brentnall will also be required to register as a sex offender for five years.
