Local Radio DJ Found With Hundreds of Child Abuse Images Is Spared Jail
Paul Brownlee, a familiar face in Scottish radio, having worked for stations like Wave 102 and Radio Forth, was sentenced to two years of community supervision and 200 hours of unpaid work after being found with over 600 indecent images of children on his computer. Brownlee, known for his work as a DJ and for hosting events with stars like the Cheeky Girls, previously worked as a manager at Specsavers in St Andrews.
Police, acting on a tip-off, raided Brownlee's home in January 2019, seizing his laptop which contained 663 indecent images of children, categorized as follows: 16 Category A, 30 Category B, and 617 Category C. Brownlee later admitted to making these images between January 2018 and January 2019.
Despite the seriousness of the offense, Sheriff Lorna Drummond opted not to jail Brownlee, citing his first-offender status and the relatively lower number of images compared to other cases. She deemed the community payback order to be a suitable alternative to imprisonment, and placed Brownlee on the sexual offenders register for two years.
Social work reports concluded that Brownlee posed a limited risk to the public and there were no protection issues. His lawyer, Stuart Hamilton, argued that Brownlee demonstrated an understanding of the severity of his actions.
