Serial Sex Offender's Sentence Could Be Increased After Murder Conviction

Pawel Relowicz, who is serving 27 years in prison for raping and murdering student Libby Squire, may face a longer sentence after his case was referred to the Attorney General.

Relowicz, a 26-year-old butcher, was convicted in February following a trial where evidence revealed his pattern of targeting vulnerable women. He had previously committed a string of sex offenses, including voyeurism and stealing underwear from women's homes, before killing the 21-year-old student.

The Attorney General's office has confirmed that Relowicz's sentence is being examined under the Unduly Lenient Sentence (ULS) scheme. This scheme allows for the review of sentences deemed too lenient and gives the Attorney General the power to refer cases to the Court of Appeal for possible increases.

The case details show that Relowicz actively sought out Ms Squire in a drunken state on the night of her disappearance. He drove her to a secluded location, where he raped her and then disposed of her body in the River Hull.

Ms Squire's body was discovered in the Humber Estuary nearly seven weeks later, but pathologists could not determine the cause of her death or whether she was still alive when she entered the water.
