Ex-traffic controller sexually abused two boys in 1990s.

Former Traffic Controller Jailed for Abusing Two Boys

Peter Chiverton, 53, of Upper College Ride, Camberley, was sentenced to nine years and six months in prison on Monday (July 15) for abusing two boys in the 1990s.

Chiverton was convicted of eight separate counts, including one of indecent assault "involving penetration," at Guildford Crown Court. Judge Peter Moss, who passed the sentence, stated that the abuse had left one victim with "psychological issues" and the other with enduring feelings of guilt.

Judge Moss described Chiverton's actions as "grooming" before the sexual abuse occurred. He highlighted the lasting impact of the abuse on the victims.

In mitigation, Chiverton's barrister, Sarah Read, presented him as a man of previous good character. She emphasized his 23-year career as a traffic controller before his retirement due to health issues. A former colleague described Chiverton as "a caring person; a shy chap whose heart is in the right place."

Ms Read also mentioned Chiverton's ongoing health struggles, including mobility difficulties, back pain, and depression, particularly following the loss of his mother and aunt.

Chiverton will serve half of his sentence in prison and be released on licence. During this time, he can be recalled to prison for any further offenses or breaches of parole conditions. He is also subject to a sexual harm prevention order and must register as a sex offender indefinitely.
