Sex offender took advantage of girl's trust after building relationship with 15-year-old.
Ice Skating Enthusiast Sentenced for Sexual Activity with Minor
A 24-year-old ice skating enthusiast, Rhys Burton, has been sentenced to a 22-month suspended prison sentence for engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl. The incident occurred in 2018, and Burton initially denied the charges before changing his plea on the day of his trial.
According to the prosecution, Burton met the girl through their shared interest in ice skating and began showering her with compliments, gradually becoming closer. This led to a kiss, which made the girl feel uncomfortable.
The judge, Kate Rayfield, emphasized the importance of the law in protecting vulnerable young people from engaging in sexual activity. She highlighted that while the girl was willingly involved, she felt uncomfortable due to the age difference and the power imbalance in the relationship.
Burton's defense attorney argued that he genuinely believed he was in love with the girl but acknowledged his actions were wrong and that he ended the relationship upon realizing the inappropriateness of his behavior.
Burton will also have to complete 20 days of rehabilitation and participate in a sex offender treatment program. Additionally, he is subject to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and must register as a sex offender for the next decade.
