Sheep-shearing sex predator booted back to Scotland.
High-Risk Sex Offender Deported from Falkland Islands, Returns to Scotland
A high-risk sex offender, Roland Wedgwood-Orekoya, has been deported from the Falkland Islands and returned to Scotland. Wedgwood-Orekoya, a sheep shearer known as Seyi, was previously jailed in the South Atlantic for a terrifying attack on a teenage girl he lured to his home. He is now back in Britain, with authorities issuing a warning that he poses a danger to women.
Police in Glasgow took legal action last week to ensure Wedgwood-Orekoya signs the sex offender register. The 32-year-old has a history of traveling the world for work, primarily as a shearer, and has strong ties to Aberdeenshire.
In 2021, Wedgwood-Orekoya arrived in the Falkland Islands, taking jobs as a shearer and in the fishing industry. In April 2022, he approached his victim while they were both waiting in line at a late-night burger van in the capital, Port Stanley. The girl was intoxicated but clearly stated she was not interested in him.
According to court records, Wedgwood-Orekoya "clearly intended luring her back to [his] accommodation in order to have sex with her." He offered to share his cannabis with her in exchange for accompanying him back to his lodgings. However, upon arriving at his residence, Wedgwood-Orekoya stripped naked and attempted to force himself on her, tearing some of her clothes and leaving her bruised after a sustained assault.
The victim managed to escape after punching Wedgwood-Orekoya. Despite denying the sexual assault, he was found guilty. A probation report highlighted his "transient lifestyle" and his frequent movement between countries for shearing work, further increasing the danger he poses.
Sentencing Wedgwood-Orekoya to 18 months' imprisonment, Judge Malcolm Simmons stated, "You have been assessed as being a high risk of harm to the public, namely females, especially those to whom you are sexually attracted. There was clearly a level of violence in the way you manhandled your victim."
"This was clearly a frightening event for her," the judge continued. "What occurred was not a momentary touching but a sustained assault. She was living at home with her parents, having recently left school. You are a man in your thirties. You specifically targeted a particularly vulnerable victim, a young girl who you knew had been drinking. You continue to deny the offence. You have shown no remorse."
Last week, Police Scotland took legal action at Glasgow Sheriff Court to mitigate the risk Wedgwood-Orekoya poses to women. The force secured an order requiring him to sign the sex offender register until 2032. This means he must inform the police of any changes to his address or name and will be subject to regular monitoring.
