Child Rapist Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison
Simon Peter Turnbull, 44, was sentenced to 14 years in prison at Carlisle Crown Court today for crimes committed against a victim under the age of 13 last year.
Turnbull, of Fairhill Road, Penrith, had previously pleaded guilty to one count of child rape and a second charge involving multiple incidents.
Prosecutor Tim Evans told the court that the victim was so distressed during a police interview that they were unable to speak at times, resorting to writing down their thoughts in a notebook. The child stated, "I hate him" when referring to Turnbull.
Upon arrest, Turnbull initially responded with "What, really?". He later admitted to raping the child multiple times during a second police interview. A probation officer described Turnbull as showing an "alarming lack of victim empathy."
Turnbull, who was shaven-headed, displayed little emotion while sitting in the dock with his arms folded as the details of his crimes were presented to Judge Peter Davies. Several deeply moving impact statements were read in court, highlighting the profound effects on the victim's family.
Sentencing Turnbull, who had no prior convictions, Judge Davies stated that he was guilty of a "persistent course of conduct committed for your own sexual gratification". The judge noted that this had "left a wake of devastation".
Turnbull will be required to register as a sex offender indefinitely and comply with the strict terms of a sexual harm prevention order. He must serve at least half of the 14-year sentence in custody and will only be considered for release when a parole board deems him suitable.
