Serial Rapist Jailed for 24 Years for Attacks on Two Young Victims
Stephen Dowle, 42, of Folkestone, has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for 11 counts of rape against two females over a decade. The attacks, which occurred between 2008 and 2018, left both victims suffering from nightmares, panic attacks, and severe psychological trauma.
Judge Simon James, presiding over the case at Canterbury Crown Court, described Dowle as showing no remorse or insight into the impact of his actions. He highlighted that Dowle continues to deny the rapes, despite being found guilty following a trial last year.
Dowle's barrister, Diana Pignot, acknowledged his continued denial, stating that he believes the jury made a mistake and that he is not open to rehabilitation. This stance, she argued, presented a difficulty in seeking leniency in sentencing.
The court heard powerful statements from both victims. The older victim, now in her 20s, described the ongoing impact of the rapes, stating that she still suffers nightmares, panic attacks and is unable to shop alone. The younger victim's carer spoke of the girl's night terrors, severe anxiety, and difficulty trusting adults. The girl is said to have drawn a wanted poster of Dowle, expressing relief that he is now in prison and cannot harm her.
Judge James commended the victims for their bravery in coming forward and reporting their ordeal. He described Dowle as a sexual deviant and sentenced him to 24 years in prison, with two-thirds of the sentence to be served before parole eligibility. An additional four years will be served on licence.
Dowle was convicted of seven counts of raping underaged girls, assaulting a girl under 16, and four counts of raping a female over 16.
