Convicted Sex Offender Found After Fleeing Hampshire Hospital
Stephen Munden, 54, who had been on the run after escaping from a secure hospital in Hampshire, has been found. He went missing from Mildmay Oaks independent hospital in Winchfield on Tuesday evening, prompting a multi-force appeal for information.
Hampshire Constabulary confirmed that Munden handed himself in to Thames Valley Police at around 00.45am on Wednesday. He was subsequently detained and taken to a mental health facility.
Munden was described as a "vulnerable adult" with mental health treatment needs. He had been detained at the facility under a hospital order since 2014, following convictions for sexual offences including possessing, making, and attempting to make indecent images of children, and sexual assault on a child under 13.
Munden, who was detained under the Mental Health Act, was last seen leaving Mildmay Oaks. He had climbed over a fence and fled the hospital grounds on foot.
Despite being sent to the hospital by a judge after being convicted of sexually touching a child and possessing indecent images of children, the hospital stated that they did not consider Munden suitable for a secure setting. This decision has raised questions about the adequacy of security measures at the facility.
